Amphora is a non-hormonal vaginal gel that works by maintaining a low vaginal pH that creates a hostile environment to sperm and bacteria. Amphora uses lactic acid to maintain the acidic pH in the vagina.

The Phase III contraceptive clinical trial concluded in 2014. The trial compared the effectiveness of Amphora with FDA-approved Conceptrol, which contains nonoxynol-9.
Amphora is approved by the FDA as a sexual lubricant.
In the Phase III trial, women used Amphora at least one hour before sex. The results from the study will be evaluated to establish a possible longer window.
